Behavior

Reindeer are energetic and spirited animals. They are shy as well as curious. When reindeers are alarmed by something, the adults usually moan and the fawns grunt. These lively animals are hard to chase but once they are caught they will follow their master and are easy to work with. Domesticated (working) reindeer are usually very gentle, except for during breeding season, when the bulls can be dangerous.

In the summer, reindeer stay near or on the Artic coast. But once winter comes, they immediately start their long migration to their winter habitat in forested areas. When reindeer migrate, they gather into groups of hundreds of thousands so that they can travel safely. A migrating herd usually follows the same routes as last year; their yearly trails are very easy to see, even from a plane! Reindeer will even swim in rivers, lakes and streams when they migrate, and research tells us they can travel up to 37 miles an hour (almost 60 km/her), and cover about 96 miles (about 155 km) in a single day!
